The rioters may be the playing out their roles in the End-of-Empire scenario. In their violence, they certainly come close to the British applying their scorched earth policy to the lands of the Boers (and others).
Violence begets violence: sometimes the mills of the gods grind fast; sometimes they grind slowly... but they grind exceedingly fine.
