This September, We’ll Remember…

Every September, marking as it does
The tail of the season, produces a
Plant to remember it by. Last year a
Pumpkin in the compost heap had pride of
Place, this year we celebrate two small tomato
Plants. They arrived in small black plastic pots
We could just lift up to the sun held in
Two hands. Buried, they grew into this vast,
Grand, mad, tumultuous exuberance.

  1. They look like good plants. This year our cosmos outgrew everything else, stems about 3" to 4" in diameter at the base and looking for a fight. They had a few blooms, but looked more like plug-ugly bamboo from somewhere.
    They were monstrous.

One of the best things about tomatoes is my mother's tomato jam, made with cinnamon, cloves and zests of citrus fruits. Most people do not like the thought of a sweet tomato jam, but it is a fruit, and it has such an exotic taste on toast.
